Education and Experience
I began my studies in Malaysia, where I completed a Diploma in English Language Teaching before pursuing a degree in Language and Linguistics. After studying in Malaysia for four years, I completed my final year at the University of Essex in Colchester, England, specialising in English Language and TESOL.
Most of my teaching career has been in the UK, working in public schools with students from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of learning needs. I have taught both one-to-one and group English classes, volunteered teaching English to underprivileged children in Malaysia, and developed curriculum materials and workbooks to support autistic and ADHD learners.
Academic Interests
My academic interests are strongly centred around the English language and language learning. I have a particular interest in English linguistics, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, phonetics and phonology, and how English changes depending on context and the people using it. My background in TESOL has also given me a strong interest in second-language acquisition and in the challenges and experiences of learning English as an additional language.
I am fascinated by the way language is used to communicate ideas, identity, culture, and meaning, and I enjoy exploring the differences between the English we learn in textbooks and the English people actually use in everyday life. I am also interested in how students develop their fluency in English and in finding engaging and practical ways to support their language development.
Hobbies
Outside of school, I have quite a few interests! I love listening to music and playing music myself, and I particularly enjoy discovering new artists and genres. One of my favourite things to do is attend live jazz sessions — there is something very special about experiencing music performed live. I also enjoy reading, travelling, and exploring new places and cultures.
When I’m not listening to music or planning my next trip, you’ll probably find me at the gym, wandering around an art gallery or museum, or enjoying a fabulous meal. I love learning about different cultures, history, art, and the stories behind the places I visit. I’m always happy to have a conversation about music, books, travel, art, or a new place worth exploring or eating at!
A couple of encouraging quotes I live by:
“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” — Carl Jung
“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” — Aesop
